Races begin at 11:00 am and end by 6:00 pm but usually much earlier.
The event is presented by the Lake Hopatcong Racing Association and this group has been holding races at Lake Hopatcong for over 50 years. The boats that will be racing are of different sizes and some with speeds over 100 mph. The majority of the boats are homemade hydroplanes and they put on a great show. There is a class of boats called Jersey Skiffs (JS) that look more like a large row boat but much faster. The races consist of qualifying races by classes and then final races by classes later in the day. The races are a few laps long so there is an opportunity to get some great action photos.
This is a good opportunity to use your large zoom lenses for some action photos with water spray and colorful boats. The viewing area is large and has good vantage points for the entire race course.
Suggested gear is a zoom lens and tripod or monopod. Smaller lenses can be used to capture the nearby action in the pits. Bring a chair if you like.
There will be food trucks on site.
Admission is $10 per person (suggested donation)
Contact Peter Rathjens if you have questions.
